The Lower Seat

Philippians 2:3-4

Philippians does not say, “Avoid pride when you feel spiritual.”

It says, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit.”

Nothing.

That is not about personality. That is about posture.

Worship teams can become quietly competitive. Not always out loud, but in the heart. Who gets featured. Who gets noticed. Who gets the mic. Who gets thanked. Who is trusted. Who feels overlooked.

Unity cannot survive when ego is driving.

Paul gives a different way.

In humility, count others more significant than yourselves.

That does not mean you think less of yourself. It means you think of yourself less. It means you choose the lower seat. You celebrate other people. You make space. You do not cling to your preference like it is spiritual.

A team becomes healthy when leaders model humility first.

Before you lead worship this week, ask yourself a simple question.

Where am I grasping.

Then release it.

Choose the lower seat, not as a loss, but as worship. Jesus did. And your team will feel the difference.

Discussion Questions

  1. Where are we most tempted to compete with each other instead of care for each other.
  2. What is one preference you need to release for the good of the team and the church.
  3. What would it look like to consider others better than yourself in a practical way this week.

Prayer

Jesus, form Your humility in us. Free us from needing to be noticed. Make us a team that serves with joy and values people more than position.
