Quick to Listen

James 1:19

James gives a simple order.

Quick to listen. Slow to speak. Slow to anger.

Most team conflict is not about theology. It is about speed.

We speak too fast. We assume too much. We react before we understand.

In rehearsals, this shows up as sharp comments and rushed correction. In planning, it shows up as frustration and feeling unheard. In communication, it shows up as people who stop contributing because it is safer to be quiet.

James is not saying never speak. He is saying listen first.

Listening is leadership.

When someone is struggling, do not jump to blame. Ask a question. When someone gives feedback, do not defend. Receive it. When someone feels overlooked, do not minimize. Understand it.

The moment you become quick to listen, you become safer. And when a team becomes safe, unity stops being a slogan and starts being real.

Before you sing together today, practice listening together.

Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do as a worship leader is slow your mouth down and love people enough to hear them.

Discussion Questions

  1. Where do we tend to speak fast instead of listen well on this team.
  2. What is one conversation we have been avoiding that needs clarity.
  3. What would change if we assumed people are trying, even when they miss it.

Prayer

Jesus, slow us down. Make us quick to listen and slow to speak. Guard our team from careless words and give us patience with one another.
