Presence and Prayer

My House Will Be Called Prayer

Matthew 21:13

Jesus says, “My house will be called a house of prayer.”

Not a house of production. Not a house of excellence. Not a house of performance.

Prayer.

That does not mean excellence is unimportant. It means prayer is foundational.

A team can be very good at music and still be weak in prayer. And when prayer is weak, dependence shifts. You start relying on skill to carry spiritual weight. You start using energy to replace presence. You start trying to manufacture what only God can give.

Prayer puts things back in order.

Prayer says, God, we cannot do this without You. Prayer says, God, we do not want to. Prayer says, God, meet Your people.

If you want a prayer culture, start small.

Pray before you talk. Pray when something goes wrong. Pray when someone shares a burden. Pray for the congregation by name.

Over time, prayer becomes normal.

And when prayer is normal, presence becomes real.

Discussion Questions

  1. If someone joined our team, would they say prayer is central or occasional.
  2. What is one thing we could change that would make prayer normal for us.
  3. Where do you feel like we rely on talent more than dependence.

Prayer

Jesus, make us a people of prayer. Teach us to depend on You, not on our ability. Let our rehearsals and services be soaked in prayer and shaped by Your presence.
