Theme: Zion

Zion in Scripture is layered with meaning — the physical mountain of Jerusalem, the city of God, the dwelling place of his presence, and ultimately the eternal city toward which all of history is moving. Songs about Zion connect the local gathered church to the grand biblical narrative of God establishing his dwelling place among his people forever. They celebrate the church as the community that lives in the overlap of the already and the not-yet, tasting now what will one day be fully revealed. Zion songs often carry a prophetic and eschatological weight, lifting the congregation's imagination beyond present circumstances to the city whose architect and builder is God. They are songs for the long journey, sustaining the church with a vision of home.
