He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. Songs of shelter and covering celebrate the protection and safety available in the presence of God — not the absence of danger, but the radical security of a soul hidden under the wings of the Almighty. They draw on the rich imagery of Psalm 91: the fortress, the refuge, the shadow of wings, the feathers of protection — ancient metaphors for the nearness of a God who does not merely observe His people's dangers from a safe distance but places Himself between them and what threatens.
