Theme: Liberation

Liberation is the Exodus story told forward into every generation: God hears the cry of the oppressed, God acts to free the captive, God leads His people out of bondage into the spacious land of His promises. Songs about liberation are politically and spiritually charged in the best possible way — they celebrate a God who is actively, specifically on the side of those who are not free. I've found these songs particularly powerful in communities with firsthand experience of oppression, addiction, or systemic injustice. They're also important for any worship culture that wants to hold the personal and the prophetic together — celebrating both individual salvation and the larger liberation God is working in the world around us.
