Theme: Hunger

Spiritual hunger may be the most reliable sign of genuine spiritual life — the soul that is satisfied has stopped growing. Songs about spiritual hunger are among the most passionate in the worship tradition: 'As the deer pants for the water, so my soul longs after You.' They give voice to the desire that is both the gift and the call of God — the desire for more of Him. I use these songs at intentional moments in worship, not as background but as declaration. When a congregation sings about hunger together, it tends to create and sustain the very thing being declared. These songs are particularly powerful in the context of extended prayer, fasting, or any season of corporate pressing in for more of God's presence and purposes.
