Theme: Eternity

The great temptation of the church in any era is to become so focused on the present that it loses its orientation toward eternity. Songs about eternity restore that perspective — reminding the congregation that we are pilgrims and sojourners, that the best is always still ahead, that everything we see is temporary and everything unseen is eternal. I've found these songs particularly powerful in grief contexts, where the only adequate comfort is the sure and certain hope of resurrection. But they're also important for preventing the myopia that comes from comfort — the settled satisfaction with present blessing that forgets there is a city we are being built toward, a face we are moving toward seeing, a fullness not yet revealed.
