Theme: Doubt

The church has often been terrible at making room for doubt, and the cost has been significant — people who can't bring their real questions to worship end up not bringing themselves. Songs that hold faith and doubt together do something the Psalms did routinely: they give voice to the genuine experience of a believer who believes, but who needs help with unbelief. These songs create a worship culture that is honest rather than one that performs certainty it doesn't always feel. I've found them particularly powerful in post-tragedy services, in contexts of spiritual questioning, and whenever the congregation is navigating genuine uncertainty about hard things. They create space for faith to be real rather than managed — and real faith, however small, is always enough.
