Jesus didn't call people to attend services — He called people to follow Him. Songs about discipleship put that call back at the center of the worship experience, moving the congregation beyond the receiving posture into the following posture. They're particularly important in churches where worship has become primarily about individual experience divorced from the demanding, costly, joyful reality of actually living as Jesus' apprentice. I use discipleship songs at significant commissioning moments, at the launch of new ministries, and at the start of teaching series on formation. They function as invitations and recommitments — fresh responses to the still-ongoing call of the master: 'Follow me. Every day. Everywhere. Whatever it costs.'
