One of the greatest things corporate worship can do is break the illusion of self-sufficiency. Songs about dependence on God are the antidote to the deep cultural formation that tells us strength means needing nothing and no one. In worship, we practice a different posture: hands open, eyes looking up, full acknowledgment that apart from Him we can do nothing. I've found these songs most powerful in seasons when a congregation is facing something genuinely beyond their capacity — financial crisis, leadership transition, community fracture. In those moments, songs about dependence aren't weakness; they're wisdom. They name what is true and turn it into the most powerful posture possible: complete trust in the One who holds all things.
