Theme: Awe

If there's one thing in short supply in contemporary worship culture, it's holy awe — the genuine, speechless astonishment before the greatness and majesty of God that marked every genuine encounter in Scripture. Isaiah was undone. John fell as though dead. Peter said 'depart from me, for I am a sinful man.' Songs about awe try to recover this essential dimension of worship: that God is not a buddy to be chatted with casually but a consuming fire to be approached with reverence. I've learned that healthy worship ecosystems need both intimacy and awe — the tenderness of a child with a Father, and the holy trembling of a creature before its Creator. Without awe, intimacy becomes presumption.
